Perhaps you’ve seen the ads and maybe know someone who has benefited from spinal decompression for treating back pain due to bulging or herniated discs, or even stenosis.
You then find out ‘Decompression Therapy” is not covered by your insurance so you have to pay cash, with costs ranging anywhere from $1,800 to $8,000-plus.
Regardless of what anyone tells you, there’s no valid scientific differentiation between a treatment known as mechanical traction and decompression. They are one and the same and serve the same exact purpose.
Insurance companies reimburse for mechanical traction, however, it doesn’t pay nearly as well as when one can charge cash by calling it “”decompression.”
Some insurance companies have somehow been lead to believe that decompression is some new form of therapy, but it’s been around for decades. Being a new form of therapy, they consider it experimental, and will tell you that they don’t cover it.
Well, they won’t cover it if you don’t call it what it really is — spinal mechanical traction.
At Professional Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, PC, we provide spinal traction — a.k.a. spinal decompression — using the Kennedy Table, which offers the most important advantages over any other traction/decompression table on the market.
The Kennedy Table allows the patient to be placed in various positions, whereas other devices only allow one position. If you’ve had a problem with the disc(s) in your spine, you will probably do better lying on your stomach (most people do), but many machines won’t even allow this position.
In an effort to build good will and rapport, we’ve decided to call spinal decompression what it is: spinal mechanical traction, so your insurance company will reimburse for its use.
I cannot stand to send someone out of my office in pain if I have something that could help; so I don’t. I use what I have and what I know to do the best I can for each of my patients. If you’ve learned about the benefits of spinal decompression, then why not use your insurance?
Professional Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation is the first facility in the entire shore region to provide the ATM2 (Active Therapeutic Movements) machine; we have the most experience with its use.
Some conditions respond better to spinal decompression, some better to the ATM2, some better to using both devices in combination and/or as an adjunct to manual and therapeutic procedures.
We do not run a ‘mill type’ operation. There is no “clock watching.” Your treatment session time is based upon need and motivation, so unless you have time constraints, or your condition warrants otherwise, don’t expect to be shoved out after 45 to 60 minutes.
People are becoming more aware that doctors of physical therapy and the evidenced based practice of physical therapy provides the best choice to receive rehabilitative care for your musculoskeletal condition and pain.
So many people choose a physical therapy facility based upon “location of convenience.” However, more people are gradually learning that it truly does matter where you go for your physical therapy. People have been more than willing to drive the extra miles to acquire quality care.
