The Middle Township High School Alumni Association presented scholarships to three graduating seniors at their 29th Annual Dinner June 7th held at the Avalon Links Restaurant. Honored were Cameron Hamer who plans to attend Albright College, majoring in Psychology, Drew Harris who will be attending Rowan University to pursue a career in Pediatric Medicine and Gabriella Caraballo who plans to attend the University of Delaware, majoring in Sports Health. Each were awarded $1,000.
Scholarship committee chair and Trustee, Leigh Ann “Holmes” Downie said “it is wonderful to see the highly motivated student applicants that we had this year, it makes the decision difficult”. Downie added “we are thankful to the contributions throughout the year to make these awards possible”. Committee member and Past President, Jeanette “Letts” McCarty and Trustee, Howard Trout said the committee is always encouraged by the candidates to continue this gratifying tradition of awarding scholarships.
The non-profit organization is funded by dues and contributions. Treasurer and Past President Rick Rixey said “We are greatly appreciative of the MTHS Multi-Class Reunion Committee and alumni members for their contributions to the Scholarship Fund”.
This years dinner yielded a particular surprise when fellow alumni, Don Moore, class of 1961 stood and pledge to donate $1,000 for a scholarship to be given in 2020 in honor of former coach and teacher, Fred Grosse who was in attendance. Don said that it was Mr. Grosse’s influence on him that encouraged him to go to college.
Mr. Grosse was honored at the gesture. “This is the type of generosity we seek,” said President Leatrice Westcott adding, “the future of our association and the future of our graduates depends on this type of giving and we look forward to more from alumni members.” The association encourages alumni classes that are having reunions to consider donating to the association. Westott concluded, “The association is always open to any new ideas to raise funds. Lets make the 30th anniversary year a big one.”
