This year, Coach Chuck Hinchcliffe is bringing the unique martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Rio Grande with his new school, Cape May Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Owners Chuck and Mary Hinchcliffe, who also own and operate Hinch Marina in Cape May, opened their new studio this past August to teach jiu jitsu and share the many benefits of the sport with the Cape May County community.
Chuck has always had an interest in martial arts, stemming from his years as a high school wrestler. In 1995, his friend recommended a jiu jitsu school in Burlington, NJ, where he began to train with Ricardo Almeida, a world champion and UFC fighter, under Renzo Gracie. After training with Ricardo for four years, Chuck stepped away in 2000 because of the commute and his career.
In 2015, Chuck decided to begin training again when his friend recommended South Jersey Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Berlin, NJ. At the school, he worked with his old training partner, Steve Bongiorno, to assist with their kids program. In January 2019, in affiliation with South Jersey Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Chuck started a jiu jitsu recreation program with the City of Cape May at the Franklin Street School. This experience confirmed that there was interest in Cape May County, so Chuck decided to expand and opened his own studio in August 2019.
Since opening, the school has attracted new students from all areas of Cape May County, including men, women, and children of all ages and skill levels. While most people train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for self-defense and physical fitness, the sport also instills self-confidence, self-discipline, and improves problem-solving skills. Jiu jitsu is a ground fighting art, but they do teach some striking; however the goal is to get somebody to the ground and to submit them, so people learn how to use their mind and techniques to overcome their opponents.
The list of benefits is endless, but what truly sets the sport apart is the strong communal bond you will find in this jiu jitsu school.
“A lot of people find that the community in jiu jitsu is very different than a lot of other martial arts and sports because there’s a trust factor,” Chuck said. “The way I teach my students, and this comes down from my instructors, is I want everybody to be able to find benefits from training. If you have a guy that spends his day at the gym who is 250 pounds of pure muscle and he’s training with a young lady who is 120 pounds…I don’t want him to be afraid of hurting her and I don’t want her to be afraid to train with him. They just have to adjust their training, so they’re still using technique and still improving. And we’ve had so much success with this type of training and it’s a blast to watch.”
Cape May Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers adult fundamental classes, youth classes for kids ages 9-15, and No Gi fundamentals classes throughout the week. The fundamental classes are for beginners, and each class can be tailored to each person dependent on skill level. The school plans to add an additional youth class for younger children this November, as well as an intermediate class this winter. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Brazilian jiu jitsu tournaments, if interested.
The studio also offers yoga classes with Cassandra Farnan of Saltwater Yoga three mornings each week.
