Ferry Hires First Female Engineer

CAPE MAY – Today, Cape May – Lewes Ferry officials announced that Candice J. Tripp was selected to serve as a Third Assistant Engineer aboard the ferry vessels, the first female engineer in the history of the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. Ms. Tripp began working at the Ferry on Sept. 28, 2012 and reports to Port Engineer Jim Gillespie.
“As a Kings Point graduate, Ms. Tripp has the training to be a professional marine engineer and she’s an outstanding addition to our team,” said Jim Gillespie, Port Engineer for the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. “Candice is a high-energy person who will bring a new perspective to the job at hand and we are fortunate to have her aboard in our marine engineering department.”
As the Third Assistant Engineer, Ms. Tripp is responsible for overseeing vessel equipment operation, making log entries and reporting problems to the Chief Engineer. She assists with maintenance and repair of the vessels while underway. When assigned ashore, the Assistant Engineer is responsible for assisting in the overhauling of the main engines, preparing the vessels for Coast Guard inspections and performing repairs and maintenance as needed.
“I appreciate and welcome the opportunity to handle the responsibilities of an Assistant Engineer aboard the ferry vessels,” Tripp said. “The Ferry is a great place to start my career and my co-workers have gone out of their way to welcome me aboard. I really enjoy being an engineer for the Ferry and I look forward to many more trips between Cape May and Lewes.”
Prior to joining the Ferry, Ms. Tripp served as an intern to the Port Engineer of Central Marine Logistics, Inc. of Griffith, Indiana, where she gained insight and knowledge of the business and shipping aspects of the Port Engineer’s position. In addition, she logged more than 300 days sailing as an Engine Cadet and Midshipman, including stints with PASHA Hawaiian Transport and Interlake Steamship Company.
A 2012 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, Ms. Tripp earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering and is a licensed Third Assistant Engineer, Steam and Motor Vessels, Any Horsepower. She resides in Cape May, New Jersey.
