Cape Was Flush with Tourist July 4

SWAINTON –– “Theoretically we had more people here (over Fourth of July weekend),” said Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) board member William Burns Jr. referring to the countywide increase in effluent flow in comparison to the same time last year.
More toilets flushing may mean more travelers came to enjoy the Jersey shore for the holiday weekend. However, because sewage is not separated from storm water runoff, the rainy weekend definitely had an impact on those numbers, MUA Executive Director Charles Norkis said.
Norkis reported at the MUA’s July 16 meeting here that effluent flow increased from last year in the following municipalities over July 4 weekend:
• Wildwood increased by 28 percent.
• Cape May 22 percent
• Middle Township 19 percent
• 18 percent in Ocean City.
The fact that it has rained on the past three Independence Days seems to further skew the actual effluent amounts.
