WILDWOOD — The Wildwood Recreation Commission announced that the grand opening of the Byrne Community Center will take place Oct. 26 from 1 – 6 p.m. The center is at the Maxwell Field athletic complex on Park Boulevard with the entrance on Youngs Avenue.
Festivities will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with commission members, elected officials and other dignitaries, according to a release.
All Wildwood residents and interested parties are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
The Byrne Community Center is a state-of-the-art facility that features a basketball court, exercise room, dance studio, computer lab, and kitchen facilities.
Funding for the center included a $1-million grant from the Byrne Fund For Wildwood, Inc.
The recreation commission is committed to having the community center offer a wide range of programs and activities to meet the needs of Wildwood residents of all ages. They want the center to become a focal point for community events, activities and services throughout the year.
In other commission business, Pete Byron, Wildwood Realtor, was elected chair, Ernie Troiano III, Wildwood firefighter, was elected vice-chair and Susan Maxwell was appointed recording secretary. Carrie Williamson was appointed liaison to senior citizens and Odilia Sexto was appointed liaison to the Latino community.
After hearing testimony from Wildwood High School officials, the commission voted to designate the community center as a Secondary Emergency Site of Evacuation. The convention center is first.
Testimony was also taken from a local nurse informing the commission of health and nutrition programs available for seniors. The commission is considering a range of programs and activities that will benefit all Wildwood residents.
The first major event to take place in the Byrne Community Center will be the Homecoming Dance for Wildwood High School.
The dance will take place Oct. 25.
Only Wildwood High School students and school officials are permitted to attend.
