This year, Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School is celebrating 20 years of teaching kindness and compassion to students Pre-K through Grade 8 in Cape May County.
The school, located in Cape May Court House, offers excellent academics, personalized attention, and a quality curriculum rooted in Gospel values to provide a safe and supportive environment where students can excel. The spacious 23-acre campus gives students space for nature walks, science activities, sports, and more, while the inside facilities provide students with everything they need to succeed, including everything from iPads and Chromebooks to a new sensory and motor development room.
Tom McGuire, Principal of Bishop McHugh, says the school’s focus on blended learning, also known as “student-centered learning,” has set the school apart from many other schools in the area. By incorporating technology into lessons and creating personalized learning paths, every student at Bishop McHugh receives a world-class education at their own level to ensure students thrive. The preschool classes offer academic components to prepare children for kindergarten at an early age, while the older students in Grade 5-8 have opportunities to serve their community or pursue leadership opportunities to prepare them for high school. These programs are just a few unique additions to the curriculum that you will only find at a Catholic institution. And while the school focuses greatly on family values, church teachings and traditions, and Catholic Identity, they are extremely welcoming to non-Catholic families who still want to provide their children with a values-based education.
In March, the school closed due to coronavirus, which ultimately changed the educational landscape as kids participated in “distance learning” from home. Although distance learning is very different from the normal blended learning approach at Bishop McHugh, the teachers and staff have received a lot of positive feedback from parents and the community. By using Zoom for video-based instruction, the kids remain engaged and excited about learning during this difficult time. The teachers are working harder than ever to promote authentic learning, rather than just busywork, while also looking out for the kids’ emotional well-being as they adapt to their new learning styles. Principal McGuire attributes the success of distance learning to the community efforts from the teachers, parents, families, and students. By fostering a family and community-oriented atmosphere, he believes the school will continue to thrive and persevere.
Although the school is temporarily closed, potential students can schedule a virtual tour via Zoom and a meeting to discuss programs, curriculum, tuition assistance opportunities, and answer any questions families may have. Principal McGuire is confident that the community support will get the students and their families through this difficult time and looks forward to meeting all the new students this Fall.
Classes begin with Pre-K for children ages 2-5, followed by Kindergarten through Grade 8.
