‘Beach to Bay’ Project: Sea Isle Seeks Public Input

By Herald Staff

SEA ISLE CITY — Officials here are seeking public input on project that could boost tourism for this seaside town.
Public input is critical to the future of this project, and city officials are hosting a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. to discuss the “Beach to Bay” project. The meeting will be held in city council chambers at the public safety building on JFK Boulevard.
According to a release, the Marine Waterfront project brings new bulkheads and docks to the scenic bay front. In addition, a 12-foot wide boardwalk-style walkway will be installed along the perimeter of the marina at the foot of the bridge. A few blocks away, city officials plan to resurface the Promenade and dress it up, including the installation of new railings and planters. Also in the works is the beautification of Excursion Park.
“The whole purpose of this project comes back to the basic question, ‘how are we going to get more people over our bridge, and once they are here, how are we going to get them to stay here?’” city council President John Divney said.
“We need to attract more people, and if we do that, than every business in town will benefit. It’s all about generating more traffic.”
Planner Stuart Wiser, of Remington, Vernick and Walberg, hired to oversee the revitalization project says the goal is to “shorten the distance” between the two anchors – the beach and the bay – to attract visitors along a pedestrian-friendly walkway.
Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce President Ruth Steedley said it’s all about bringing people over the bridge.
“Once you get them here, everybody thrives,” she said. “The corridor project can only benefit everyone; the more people we bring into town, the better.”
