The Avalon Lions Club is best known as a major contributor to the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children and various charities that aid the visually impaired. But over Thanksgiving Day weekend, its 150 members are turning their focus to homeless veterans in Cape May County.
On the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 23, the Lions will appeal to customers of Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Outlet on Route 47 in Rio Grande for donations to two local charities working to help veterans in South Jersey. Donations will go to the Branches in Rio Grande and the Citizens/Veterans Advisory Committee, which place homeless veterans in temporary housing and help them find jobs and counseling.
The Lions will be outside the store hoping the spirit of Thanksgiving will fill the hearts of their neighbors as well as their yellow plastic buckets with generous donations.
The Avalon Lions Club Foundation is a nonprofit, tax exempt charity and one of the largest 501(c)3s in New Jersey, raising over $100,000 for more than a dozen charities in Cape May County.
