Atlantic City Electric and local contractor crews are working to modernize the local energy grid in Cape May County to benefit more than 7,000 customers in Middle Township, North Wildwood and the surrounding area. Crews are installing new system connections to alternate power networks to upgrade the energy distribution system from the mainland to the coastal barrier islands to further enhance the resiliency of the grid against extreme weather. This work is expected to be completed by December 2019.
Crews are also installing innovative technologies to improve system reliability, such as specialized equipment that can automatically restore service more quickly or isolate damage, as well as new utility poles, switches and other devices, and will install more than 35,000 linear feet of stronger, more resilient aerial cable.
This work is part of Atlantic City Electric’s PowerAhead Program grid resiliency initiative to modernize and enhance the local energy grid by addressing vulnerable areas on the electric system that have experienced extended outages during severe storms.
The ongoing investments in the local energy grid are having noticeable results for customers. During the past five years, the number of power outages has decreased by 22 percent and outage length has been reduced by 17 percent for Atlantic City Electric customers.
