SOMERS POINT – More than 50 lifeguards from throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties attended The Harrah’s Regional Trauma Center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s third annual Lifeguards SAVE event at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point June 27. Through the event, which included dinner and educational presentations, ARMC recognized lifeguards from southern New Jersey for their Safe Attitudes and Valiant Efforts (SAVE) in collaboration with the Life Rolls On™ Foundation and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
Speakers included Catherine Dudick, MD, Trauma surgeon and chair, Department of Critical Care, ARMC, who discussed drowning prevention in children; Ciro Randazzo, MD, MPH, neurosurgeon, AtlantiCare Neurosciences Institute and assistant professor of Neurological Surgery, Department of Neurological Surgery, Thomas Jefferson University, who discussed water-related spinal cord injuries; and Chad DeSatnick, of Cold Spring, New Jersey, northeast events coordinator, Life Rolls On™; former Cape May lifeguard and former spinal cord injury patient, who discussed his experience with spinal cord injury and his work with Life Rolls On™.
“As a beach community, we recognize lifeguards as part of our trauma system. They serve as our front-line injury prevention by establishing and enforcing rules in and around the water,” said Monica Titus, Trauma and Neurosciences director, ARMC. “As first responders, they make a difference in the outcomes of our patients. They play an important role in the lives of our community as well as our visitors.”
