COURT HOUSE – Cape May County 4-H Teen Ambassadors will host a car wash Sun., July 1 from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in front of the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center located at the 4-H Fairgrounds at 355 Court House – South Dennis Road Cape May Court House. A donation of $5.00 is requested. In addition, baked goods, iced tea and lemonade will be offered for sale. Miss Cape May County, Jennifer Taylor is expected to make an appearance. The event is coordinated by 4-H Teen Ambassador Resource Leader and Miss Cape May County Contestant, Nicole Simpkins.
The car wash is being held to raise funds to send three outstanding 4-H teens to Washington DC for a 4-H program known as Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF). Teen Ambassadors Margaret Barry, Amanda Turner and Dara Baker will attend the program in July.
CWF is a leadership program conducted by the National 4-H Council for high school age youth. The program is run for seven consecutive weeks during the summer months. It is held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland just outside Washington, D.C. Using Washington, D.C. as a working classroom delegates learn about the government, citizenship and civic education.
“ 4-H Members are eligible to attend CWF just once in their 4-H career.” explains County Agent Julie Karavan. “We are grateful to the 4-H Horse Council, 4-H Program Advisory Council and the Cape May County Board of Agriculture for their support of this opportunity for our Teen Ambassadors. We hope the community will come out and support these kids in their effort to raise the balance of the funding required for their trip. ”
New Jersey 4-H sends 40-50 4-H members and 4 adult advisors to Citizenship Washington Focus each year. The learning takes place through energetic workshops, special appointed committees, appropriate field trips (including visits with congressional representatives) and fun social events. Citizenship Washington Focus is a total Washington, D.C. experience.
