CAPE MAY – Paid parking will be available to the public in the municipal lot adjacent to City Hall on weekends from April 1 to Dec. 31 under an ordinance introduced by the City Council Aug. 20.

The ordinance sets the hours for public parking as Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and limits it to three hours. Public parking in the lot, except for municipal business, is otherwise prohibited.

The lot, heavily used by municipal employees during the week, is being made available on weekends as a means of alleviating some of the city’s parking headaches.

No overnight parking is allowed, and the paid parking will be through ParkMobile at 25 cents per 10 minutes. Signage will direct drivers to available paid parking spaces. The east side of the lot will be marked as off-limits to the public since those spots are reserved for Fire Department and emergency use only.

The ordinance is expected to come up for its required public hearing and a vote to adopt at the council’s meeting Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
