My son, Benjamin, who is the associate publisher and editor of the Herald, showed me the advertising below to fill a reporter position currently open.
Upon reflection, it became clear that finding a candidate meeting our aspirations within Cape May County would be highly unlikely. Even if such a person existed, our budget constraints would put this well beyond our capabilities. Moreover, someone with only some of the qualifications might not respond to the ad at all.
I suggested to Benjamin that we reframe the job listing to address his concerns while I reach out to you, the people of Cape May County, through this column, for several reasons:
First, I want to make clear the kind of newspaper we aspire to be through the team members we seek to have.
Second, I hope any potential candidates reading this will feel inspired to respond. Perhaps you’re the person we’re looking for – someone who aligns with our vision and is willing to work within our means or has retired in this area from a career with similar, journalistic skill sets.
Finally, I want to extend an invitation to the entire community. If you believe in our mission and want to support us, there are ways to help. Subscribe to the Herald online, recommend it to others, or even join us in some capacity to help us grow into an ever more skillful servant of our extraordinary county.
With vision, we can create a stronger, more vibrant force for good for Cape May County. Whether you’re a prospective reporter or a reader who treasures Cape May County, we pledge to you that your support will pay dividends.
