To the Editor:
I believe that President Biden will go down in history as one of our greatest presidents. From Day 1 he began to reverse Trump’s disastrous response to the Covid pandemic. He did this by setting up thousands of a free drive-in nasal testing stations all over the country in order to understand the extent and location of the problem and help us know when to get treatment and when to isolate ourselves.
He distributed free vaccine and free masks to stem the disease and eventually contain it. He used a positive approach to explain his program and to encourage us to take advantage of it. He sent out government checks to help us over the financial hump. His program was a huge success, saving thousands of lives and eventually bringing the pandemic under control.
Biden took Trump’s nosediving Covid economy and reversed it with massive government programs including 1) a huge $4 trillion infrastructure bill to be spent over 10 years, 2) a $39 billion education and student debt relief bill, 3) an $891 billion inflation reduction bill, including aid to farmers to reduce the cost of groceries and the reduction of costs for prescription drugs liken Insulin plus much more, 4) a huge $1.4 trillion American Rescue Plan bill to assist states in setting up Covid testing sites and treatment centers, supply them with the needed vaccines, medicines, medical equipment, plus numerous other things and ways to assist states in dealing with, and recovering from, the pandemic, 5) a $39 billion CHIPS Act to assist American industry in reasserting itself as the leader in computer science and computer chip production, 6) a $3 billion Artificial Intelligence Innovation Act to assist American industry in regaining leadership in the artificial intelligence industry and various other scientific fields.
These, and much more, are the robust seeds Biden has planted for our country’s future. We now have record low unemployment, a resilient, growing and opportunistic job market, reducing inflation and the world’s leading and most vibrant economy.
A lot of noise has been made about the border problem. The facts are that Biden’s border work has resulted in periods of time when the level of infiltration was lower than during Trump’s era. And also periods of time when it was a neutral situation, when as many people were leaving as coming. He did this without kidnapping, caging and traumatizing children. Without sending them far away and purposely not keeping records so as to frustrate reuniting them with their families.
Certainly, more moral and ethical work needs to be done at the border. However, raiding homes and businesses would not be my answer. I support large processing and distribution centers on the border to gain control over the situation and to distribute the desired labor (with working papers) to where it is needed. I also support setting up a U.S. government agency to advise and assist our southern neighbors in economic cooperation and development and also the reduction of internal and international crime. This would alleviate a lot of the need for people to leave their homelands to survive.
Joe Biden reversed Trump’s egocentric, divisive and uncooperative foreign policies. This was particularly in regard to Ukraine (remember when Trump tried to bribe Ukraine’s president into framing Joe Biden before the 2020 election in exchange for their promised weapons?). And also, and maybe more importantly, Biden spent hundreds of hours (Biden’s quote) in solidifying NATO and managing to get the members to play significant roles in supporting and aiding Ukraine.
Also, let us not forget that Biden managed to expand and strengthen NATO by adding two new, strong and important countries, Sweden and Finland. This was a world-changing accomplishment. Finally, Biden, after months and months of hard work and diplomacy, has negotiated a ceasefire by Israel and the release of the hostages by Hamas and has ended this seemingly endless and senseless carnage. Amazing!
Biden accomplished all this and much more without the use of ugly, divisive, angry, hateful propaganda and while still maintaining his integrity, his sincerity, his honesty and his truthfulness. Qualities that seem to be in very short supply these days. In my opinion he is a great man and an underrated and underappreciated president.
