AVALON – After much discussion the borough, responding in part to citizen concerns, has introduced an ordinance to ensure that all vehicles used to transport and dispose of solid waste be securely covered to prevent spilling of debris while on borough roadways.
The action comes in reaction to many examples of refuse blowing off trucks and other vehicles used to remove debris from the many active construction sites on Seven Mile Island each year. Weight limits placed on the 96th Street bridge in Stone Harbor have added to the amount of waste moving through Avalon as a travel way to the Avalon Boulevard bridge. The ordinance applies to any disposal vehicles on Avalon roads regardless of their origin.
Among the penalties that could be imposed for violation of the ordinance are potential loss of the permit allowing the dumpster to be placed on a borough street and monetary penalties of $250 for a first violation and $500 for subsequent violations.
A second reading and public hearing on the ordinance will be held at the Jan. 22 meeting of the Borough Council in the Avalon municipal building at 4 p.m.
