PETERSBURG – During Upper Township Committee’s Feb. 13 meeting, a member of the public asked the mayor if he was going to join other shore town mayors in signing a letter seeking a moratorium on activities related to the construction of offshore wind turbines until the cause of death of multiple whales that washed up on New Jersey and New York beaches is known.

The letter, also signed by both of New Jersey’s U.S. senators and several congressmen, asked that a moratorium should remain in place “until an investigation is held by federal and state agencies that confidently determines these activities are not a contributing factor to recent whale deaths.”

“We are not anticipating doing that,” Mayor Jay Newman said.
