Three Squaring off for Two Council Seats in Woodbine

Three Squaring off for Two Council Seats in Woodbine

By Christopher South

WOODBINE – Two Republican incumbents and a Democratic challenger are running for three seats on the Borough Council in the Nov. 5 election.

Running for the three-year terms are incumbents Barbara Prettyman and Joseph Johnson and challenger Julia Hankerson.

The Herald sent emails to all three candidates, but only Hankerson responded.

Hankerson is in the fifth generation of her family from Woodbine. She said her great-grandmother started a church in the 1940s. Her father, she said, was born in Woodbine with the services of a midwife.

She attended Woodbine Elementary School and Millville High School, and earned a bachelor’s from Lincoln University, a master’s from Rutgers University and doctorate from J&J Patterson College of Theology in Philadelphia.

Hankerson is a licensed clinical social worker who works virtually out of her home. She ran unsuccessfully for county commissioner in 2022.

She wants to ensure every child in Woodbine has a quality education, and that the borough has quality recreation programs and a quality Department of Public Works. She said she would bring a different voice to town government.
