From Cape Regional Health System

Cape Regional Health System has announced that the Ruth Newman Shapiro (RNS) Cancer and Heart Fund has pledged $259,417 to their radiation oncology program. Roe Magliocco, RNS President, and Pat McLaughlin, RNS Vice President, visited the Brodesser Cancer Center to present their first installment of $50,000 of the five-year pledge.

“RNS is excited to continue our support with the radiation oncology program at Cape Regional Medical Center, and we are so excited to purchase this new equipment to advance cancer care for the patients of Cape May County,” stated Rose Magliocco, RNS President.

The pledge purchases an upgrade to the cancer center’s Varian Truebeam Radiation Therapy Technology. This new state-of-the-art, advanced technology, the Varian PerfectPitchTM 6 Degrees of Freedom Robotic Couch, is designed to deliver advanced radiation therapy techniques with a high level of accuracy. This improves the target (tumor and treatment site) localization for daily treatments, which improves accuracy, precision, and patient safety.

“On behalf of the Cape May County community, the patients we serve, and our entire team, thank you RNS for your continued support and partnership in the fight against cancer,” stated, Joanne Carrocino, FACHE, President and CEO, Cape Regional Health System. “The addition of the Varian PerfectPitchTM is an incredible advancement in the care of patients living with a diagnosis of cancer and needing advanced radiation therapy that is close to home.”

Since 2004, RNS has supported Cape Regional Foundation and the Brodesser Cancer Center in the expansion of IMRT technology. Over the past two decades, RNS has donated over $500,000 in gifts and pledges. Their contributions have included a patient transportation van and two passenger golf carts to assist patients from the parking lot to the building. With this latest pledge, their contributions now exceed $750,000.

“The upgrade to the TrueBeam technology has been installed and is fully operational at the Brodesser Cancer Center,” stated Dr. David Cho, Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director, Brodesser Cancer Center. “PerfectPitchTM enables the patient to be positioned more flexibly during treatment thereby optimizing the treatment. In combination with TrueBeam’s advanced image guidance and motion

management tools, this upgrade enables us to extend our radiosurgery capabilities and offer our patients a wider range of high precision radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments.”
