STONE HARBOR – One month ago the Borough Council surprised the public with a vote to relocate the popular summer farmers market from its home on the lot below the borough’s iconic water tower to a larger municipal parking lot one block north on 94th Street.
The move came as a surprise because the agenda for that day’s council meeting gave no indication that a vote on the relocation was imminent.
The reaction came loud and strong, as many members of the public voiced opposition to the move and to the manner in which the decision was made. Angelo Caracciolo, chair of the borough’s Zoning Board, used the public comment period at the council’s March 5 meeting to call the decision “rushed.”
“That is not transparency,” he added.
At the Tuesday, March 19, council meeting, council member Tim Carney said he felt the council “got that one wrong.” Speaking of the abrupt decision to relocate the market, Carney said, “We didn’t listen to the citizens enough on this.”
Later in the meeting a resolution to return the market to the water tower lot received unanimous affirmation.
