SMYTHE, WILLIAM H.

SMYTHE, WILLIAM H. William H. Smythe passed away peacefully on May 14, 2023, in Wyckoff, NJ. Bill was born on September 18, 1934, to William H.L. Smythe and Phyllis Barchard Smythe in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated from the Milwaukee Country Day School where he lettered in 3 sports and captained the football team in his senior year. Bill attended Princeton University then transferred to the University of Wisconsin, where he Graduated with a BBA in finance and was President of Chi Psi fraternity. After active service in the U.S. Army and assignment to the active Reserve, he attended the Thunderbird Graduate School of International Business where he majored in Portuguese language and foreign trade business practices. In 1958, he was employed by the First National City Bank of NY (now Citicorp) in its International Division prior to assignment to its branch bank in Recife, Brazil. While training in NYC, Bill met the love of his life Lenore "Lee" Goldinger who was teaching in the NYC school system. They married in May 1959 in Wildwood, NJ, and this past spring celebrated their 64th Anniversary. Bill & Lee spent 2-1/2 years in Brazil before resigning from the bank and travelling four months in Europe. Bill next took a job with the Arizona Bank in Phoenix but decided after six months to return East to pursue an MBA at Columbia. Following graduation, he went to Shell Oil in their Corporate Economics Department. In 1968, after 2 years at Shell, Bill accepted a job with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in their NYC Securities Valuation Office (SVO). By this time Bill and Lee had 2 young boys, Bill III and John, and settled down to 28 years of train commuting to his various Manhattan financial district offices. Bill became Executive Director of the SVO in 1982 and retired in 1996. During his tenure, the staff grew to over 50, and the NAIC grew to over 350. Bill continued to consult to the industry for several years before leaving northern NJ for the tranquility of the NJ shore in Cape May County. Bill enjoyed golfing, volunteering for NJ Audubon as a birding trip assistant, being treasurer of the Bay Atlantic Symphony, and as a member and past president of the Greater Wildwood Lions Club where he was awarded a Melvin Jones medal for his service. Bill is survived by his wife Lenore, his sons Bill III (Lisa) and John, and sister Kit Smythe Eberitzsch. He is predeceased by his parents and grandparents.
