Cape May Point Arts & Science Center Sponsors “Sail for Science” Expedition on the Delaware Bay and Delaware River

This past week, ten scientists, historians, and artists boarded New Jersey’s official tall ship, the AJ Meerwald, for a two night, three day expedition from Port Norris to Trenton. Dubbed “Sail for Science,” the expedition was organized by the Cape May Point Arts & Science Center (CMPASC) in partnership with the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, and aimed to raise awareness of climate change, sea level rise, and the ecological challenges facing the region.

Departing from Bivalve, NJ, and making stops in New Castle, DE, and Bristol, PA, the crew engaged in hands-on learning, real-time storytelling, and deep conversations about the past, present, and future of the Delaware River. Onboard activities included environmental monitoring, wildlife photography, historical reflection, and —all set against the backdrop of one of the East Coast’s most critical estuaries.

“An amazing group of outstanding scientists, whose life work is advancing the study and action to embrace the protection of the environment through world class scientific study are journeying on the historic AJ Meerwald to show the real impact of climate change on wildlife and relevance to human beings,” says Bob Mullock, President of the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center.

The voyage is part of CMPASC’s broader efforts to advance climate awareness through its newly formed Climate Institute, which will officially launch next month during the Center’s inaugural Cape May Climate Summit: Local Action, Global Impact.

The Cape May Climate Summit, taking place June 20–22 in Cape May Point, will bring together scientists, policymakers, and residents for three days of programming focused on climate solutions and community action. Highlights include an opening reception on Friday evening, a full day of expert panels and a “climate solutions showcase” on Saturday, and outdoor guided tours of local wildlife areas and nature-based projects on Sunday.

The event is free and open to the public. CMPASC is currently welcoming sponsors, volunteers, and partners. To learn more or get involved, visit www.capemaypointsciencecenter.org.
