You will hear about New Jersey women and others, known as the “Saints and Sinners,” who rallied for a variety of causes in the 19th century and made significant contributions to them, most especially the Civil War, abolition, and women’s rights. Pary Tell, a local historian, tells the tale. On occasion, some women even assumed non-traditional roles in an effort to keep the Republic together—or not!
Whether at home or beyond, many women took this patriotic opportunity to serve their country while their men were away. Some maintained life at home by running farms and businesses, or outside the home, serving as nurses and civil volunteers as needed. During the carnage of war, more than 21,000 women served both Union and Confederate hospitals, as needs on the battlefield were great. Our historian, Pary Tell, sheds light on this tumultuous period with revealing perspectives on the lives of New Jersey women during the Civil War.
Pary Tell served as the Director/Curator of the Museum of Cape May County for several years before becoming the Director of the Division of Culture & Heritage for Cape May County. Now retired, she has a particular interest in telling the stories of women in our history that have often been overlooked. She holds a BA in Humanities with additional course work in American History and has given her programs around the state.
She currently serves as the Treasurer of the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey, chairs the Lower Township Historic Preservation Commission and is president of Preserving the Wildwoods, A Community Alliance. We are pleased to welcome Pary Tell to the Endicott Reardon Family Museum once again with this historical program.
