Obituary

RICHMOND, PETER

RICHMOND, PETER C. May 16, 1936 – May 27, 2024 Peter Clyde Richmond of St. Simons Island, Georgia, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2024, at the age of 88. Pete was an accomplished sailor who loved the challenge of the open sea. He travelled around the world with his job at DuPont with his wife of 61 years, Nancy (Soistman) Richmond, the love of his life and high school sweetheart. Pete grew up in Woodstown NJ and spent his summers in Avalon NJ where he tested out the various boats he built over the years. He graduated from Woodstown High School in 1954 and went on to attend Yale University where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering, and MIT earning a master's Degree in Naval Architecture. Pete was an officer in the Coast Guard and continued in the Reserves for several years. Pete and Nancy were married in Woodstown, NJ, in 1959 and went on to build a beautiful life together. They welcomed three children, Tim, Chris, and Susan. Pete, Nancy, and family lived in various cities in the US and Europe for his job at DuPont. Pete and his sailing crew sailed the North Sea and Caribbean competitively and for pleasure. In 1998, Pete and Nancy retired on St. Simon's Island where they were members of the King and Prince Golf Club and enjoyed sailing with friends. Pete was an avid reader, an advocate for military veterans and animal welfare. He loved German Shepherds and cats. Pete's life was enhanced in his retirement through the companionship of his golf buddies on St. Simons and dear friend (and husband of sister Pat) Jack Pallotta. At the time of his death, his companions were Shannon (120-pound German Shepherd) and Fiona (a 2-pound black cat). Pete will be missed by so many, his sisters, Pat Stull Pallotta (Jack), Barbara Richmond Rooney (Jim), Joanne Richmond Shideler (Robert), his children Chris and Susan, granddaughters Leah Richmond and Lauren Richmond Smith (Parker), daughters-in-law Ellen Ferguson and Charlotte Richmond, and son-in-law Joe Cillo. His many nieces and nephews will also miss Uncle Pete, who counted on him for his quick wit and refrigerator of cold beer. Peter is preceded in death by his son Tim and wife Nancy, and father and mother Joseph and Elizabeth "Bess" Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to charities supporting animal welfare. A celebration of Peter's life will be held at a later date.
