RICHARDSON, CHARLES E. Charles E. Richardson, a man of kindness and selflessness to all who had the pleasure of knowing him, passed away on December 14, 2023, at the age of 87. Born on April 20, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, Charles moved to Avalon, NJ, as a young boy, surrounded by the warmth of his family. After proudly serving in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958, Charles built a lifetime of memories and worked making lasting structures with Tozour Kerr Custom Builders. An alumnus of Middle Township High School, he was widely recognized for his leadership on the football field as a captain and for his continued dedication to his community. He was an integral part of the First United Methodist Church of Avalon and a respected member of the American Legion Post 331 Stone Harbor. Celebrated by his fellow firefighters as Uncle Charlie, his 67 years with the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department were full of devoted service, including a memorable victory in the Shaggiest Beard Contest during the department's 50th Anniversary in 1963. Charles was at once the heart of his workplace, his church, and his community, thriving in the friendship and purpose found in each. Beyond his public service, Charles greatly enjoyed skiing, running, and biking, and was a member of the Runaway AC Running Club. His adventurous spirit also included skiing trips to Club Med and delightful moments spent fishing with family. No joy, however, compared to the time spent with his adored wife of 67 years, Martha Jane, their daughters Donna Richardson Hanft (Kevin) and Terry Richardson Schweighofer (Ray), their four grand-children Heather Carnuccio (Chris), Jonathon Hand (Sheena), Jeff Hanft, and Lauren Smith (Matt), and the delight of ten great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his brother William Richardson, Charles's legacy lives on in his younger sister Anna Marie "Ree" Palmer and a circle of family and friends who encountered his thoughtful kindness. He was blessed with such a loving family and good friends. Charles, a man of joy with an ever-present "smile", was defined by the love he gave and the grace with which he provided. A true gentleman, whose every action was a testament to a life well lived. His story, richly woven with love and service, will be treasured in the hearts of many, for eternity. Charles E. Richardson's memory stands as an indelible imprint of what it means to lead a life for others, leaving our world immeasurably brighter for his presence. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 3344 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ, where visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 311, Avalon, NJ 08202 or the Avalon Rescue Squad, PO Box 233, Avalon, NJ 08202, or the First United Methodist Church, 3344 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ 08202.
