Republican members of the state Assembly filed formal papers of impeachment Feb. 27 against Attorney General Matthew Platkin.
The five-page impeachment resolution accuses Platkin of ignoring his responsibilities as the state’s chief law enforcement official in order to engage in politically motivated activities.
Among the sponsors of the resolution is Assemblyman Antwan McClellan (R-2). The impeachment resolution is not likely to advance in the Democratically controlled Legislature.
Platkin was nominated as attorney general by Gov. Phil Murphy on Feb. 3, 2022. He took office as acting attorney general on Feb. 14 but was not confirmed until Sept. 29.
Prior to assuming the office, Platkin was in private practice since October 2020. He served as Murphy’s chief counsel from 2018 to 2020.
The impeachment resolution comes as Platkin has joined with other Democratic attorneys general in challenging the constitutionality of some of President Donald Trump’s administrative orders.
It also follows the action by a Superior Court judge dismissing a racketeering indictment against Democratic South Jersey power broker George Norcross. Platkin says he intends to appeal the ruling.
