In the Spout Off section of the Cape May Herald published March 26, 2025, a Spouter from Villas wrote, “City of Philly is done its a thing of the past with the Wannamaker building gone now nothing to go there for it was a great city in the 50 60 even 70s and then it happened Street said it best the brothers and sisters are running the city lol.”
This kind of overt racism reflects poorly on the Herald and undercuts the paper’s excellent coverage of local government and economics. It also makes bad business sense to publish this kind of bigotry in a newspaper that serves a county where approximately 7% of residents identify as either Black or multiracial (United States Census Bureau data).
The poor quality of the Spouter’s writing is cold comfort. The Herald should hold itself to a higher standard.
