NORTH CAPE MAY – The Lower Township Police Department is trying to identify the person or persons responsible for vandalizing with graffiti the public restroom at Lincoln Boulevard and Shore Drive in North Cape May.

The department posted on its Facebook page that it was “seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and recognizing local artists. The crappy artwork occurred during the morning hours of Feb. 23, 2025, at Lincoln Boulevard and the bay.”

Vandals targeted the new restrooms along Shore Drive at Lincoln Boulevard.

The post went on to say if anyone has information about the crime they are asked to call the Lower Township police at 609-886-2711.

In April 2023, Lower Township Council awarded a $401,260 contract for new, permanent restroom facilities at the Lincoln Boulevard beach entrance. The restroom was an improvement over other attempts to provide restroom facilities at that location, including the use of port-a-potties and later a portable restroom trailer.

The township ended up contracting with MJJ Construction, LLC, of Atco, the lowest responsible bidder, for the construction of the facility, which was completed in October 2023.

Township Manager Mike Laffey said the vandalism is under investigation by the Police Department and he is waiting for an update from the police chief. Laffey said there were similar “tags” in other places, including on a fence belonging to a business and signs.

“I heard it was similar in Cape May,” Laffey said.

Cape May Police Chief Dekon Fashaw confirmed there were recent incidents of graffiti in Cape May, including the public restroom at Decatur Street and Lyle Lane, on some park benches along Beach Avenue, on Gurney Street, and at the shower area at Decatur Street and Beach Avenue.

Laffey said the Lower Police Department is interviewing people in the area who have security cameras; meanwhile, the graffiti has been cleaned up.

“We will probably have to paint,” Laffey said.

“This makes me sick,” he added. “We are doing all we can to tighten up this town, building all the parks, again. In the future we hope to have a restroom at Douglass Park, as well. This puts a damper on it. We are trying to tighten up the town, and these nitwits get off on messing it up.”
