Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit by Car in Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE – A local man was killed when he was struck by an automobile Wednesday, Nov. 15, while crossing Route 9 in Rio Grande.

The Middle Township Police Department released information saying Lee Nelson, 61, of Rio Grande, was crossing Route 9 at Route 47 at around 6:30 p.m., walking east, when he was struck by a car traveling north on Route 9.

Police said the motor vehicle was driven by a 68-year-old man from Mays Landing. The driver of the motor vehicle was not injured. 

Nelson was flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for injuries he received as a result of the crash.  Nelson ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center at 7:52 p.m. There were no summons issued as a result of the motor vehicle crash. 

The New Jersey Department of Transportation, Rio Grande Fire Department and Inspira Health Network assisted with the motor vehicle crash. The Middle Township Crash Team and Major Crimes Unit assisted in the investigation.
