Writer Remembers Coach Porter

By Goldberg

To The Editor:
Today our community lost a great man. I wish I could have had a conversation with him before he passed to let him know how much he affected my life. I grew up in Cape May and even though my father was around, I still had a hard time learning my way. Once I started wrestling and playing football, Bill Porter became a figure in my life. He probably didn’t even know it. He treated people with respect, he didn’t play favorites, and even though he was a disciplinarian, he always made you feel like you mattered.
There are lots of teachers and coaches who come and go. Porter was one that so many people will never forget. He taught so many of us to be men. He had expectations of all his students and his athletes. It didn’t matter what their skill level was, didn’t matter what kind of clothes they wore, didn’t matter what they looked like, or what their family life was like. He was always there for us and encouraged us to be the best we could be.
Over the last few days, I’ve been working outside by myself. Eight hours a day my mind has been drifting, thinking about the things that I learned from him…sportsmanship, hard work, strength, courage, discipline, humility, respect, and selflessness.
I’ve been thinking about his three sons, who are childhood friends of mine. I hope they are OK, and know how many people their dad inspired. I’ve been thinking about Mrs. Porter and how lucky she is to have spent all those years with him, and to have such great kids. I’ve been thinking about wrestling and football. He’s always been my favorite coach, especially in football.
In my mind, Porter was the true definition of a man. We lost a great one, but he lives in so many of us. I think that’s what life is all about. Thanks, Mr. Porter, for helping me recognize what it means to be a man. You may be gone physically, but so many of us carry your spirit…your life lessons will continue to be passed along for many years to come. I know I’ll do my part. Rest peacefully.
