To The Editor:
In 2015, the American Civil Liberties Union-New Jersey won a battle against solitary confinement as punishment of juveniles.
To be truthful, I will share that I was once forced into solitary confinement in a Wisconsin mental hospital. I was scared. I looked towards the sky out the windows in the padded room, and felt myself at the mercy of the unpredictable medical professional who, for no reason fathomable to me, banned me to locks within locked doors. I don’t believe I was in solitary for more than an hour.
Because I was put into solitary, I am with ACLU-NJ in working to ban this practice for adults. To me, being locked up when one is not a danger to society is an exercise in power and powerlessness.
The ACLU and Sen. Raymond Lesniak and Sen. Peter Barnes are working to pass legislation that would ban the practice in almost all situations.
For further information, look up www.aclu-nj-org. If or when someone tells us to sit down and shut up, we might have some idea of the refusals of solitary confinement.
