Why are Schools Open on Veterans Day?

By Craner

My husband and I live at Crest Haven Nursing Home. He is a Navy veteran. There was a lovely luncheon given for the veterans and their spouses on Veteran’s Day here at the nursing home. He was unable to go, as he has kidney dialysis on Mondays. I went in his place. I was pleased at the honor that they gave the veterans.
What I want to know is why were schools open? Do they not honor the veterans that have made our country free? I know they just came off a four day vacation with the school teacher’s conference and the weekend, and the schools probably didn’t want to take any more time off. Veteran’s Day is an important day for us all to take time to remember. The freedoms that our children have are because of the war veterans who had to fight for those freedoms. Do these kids really know what these men and women did for them?
I wish the schools could rearrange their schedules so that they could include a day set aside for our veterans. We would really appreciate that.
