To the Editor:
Starbucks opens 500 shops in China. Who cares? Star Wars nets $1.5 billion in movie sales for the latest make-believe flick. Who cares? The Kardashian woman and the basketball player are now getting divorced. Who cares? The PowerBall has now reached $1.5 billion. Who cares? Sean Penn and El Chapo are talking for whatever reason. Who cares? Sarah Palin has joined up with Trump. Who cares?
For the past dozen years, America has been engrossed with wars, losses and major problems. We have just emerged from a major recession. We have ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Middle East. Saudi Arabia and Iran are about to go to war and, of course, we’re involved. Why?
Suppose we said who cares, what would the consequences be? There was a time when we engaged in war when we were attacked. Today, we’re the guardian and protector of the world. The Shia and Sunnis disagreed long before America was discovered, and both factions hate America. We select the Shia, and the Sunni will hate us and vice-versa. Here’s where we should incite who cares and leave them alone. We must be reminded that the petro dollars of the 70s allowed the Islamic world to pollute the youth of the Middle East via Madrassas, etc. Today, they are no longer the youth of the Middle East.
Also, remember who the majority of the Sept. 11 attackers were: Saudis.
The doors to hell were opened up in 2003 when Bush went to war in Iraq. The misguided neo-cons led us through the door and now blame Obama. Their latest spokesperson, the carnival barker from New York has rallied up the masses of shallow thinking lynch-mob types and has them frenzied. A guy named Schicklgruber did this back in the 30s. They say America always survives, I don’t know about this time. Who should care?
Let’s take one aspect of American life, the City of Flint, Mich. The city’s drinking water is now poisoned. Why? The governor decided it would be cheaper to change the water system. The city had clean water from Lake Huron for years. Then the city switched from Huron to the Flint River. A technological disaster. Result: Lead(Pb) leaching and thus some 8,000 children are facing brain damage. Michigan, in part, is a bankrupt state and cities like Flint are operated by political hacks under the supervision of the governor. A prime example of less government is the best government, an old slogan of Ronald Reagan.
Were we to investigate the history of Flint and Detroit, here’s what we would discover: General Motors was built by the auto workers from Flint and Detroit in conjunction with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. When this corporation matured, they chose to reduce the power of the union, as well as to move their plants to other countries.
Money and the saving of corporate dollars in a free market society was primary. Thus cheat the workers and increase the profit.
America is America and this is only one instance of many where the less than wealthy suffer. They don’t matter. Nor do they in Flint.
In summary, this was a Republican emergency managerunder the leadership of a Republican governor in Michigan where the ‘Takeover’ failed and is catastrophic; another Katrina.
Free market and less government? Soon, somebody should care about real things.
