To the Editor:
I am new to Cape May County, having moved here just over a year ago from Monmouth County. Prior to that, I lived in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Kansas, Florida, and California. Several things have struck me about my new home, and I hope to see improvement.
The county shuts down after Labor Day, but there are still a lot of people living here year round. What can be done to bring fuller employment to the permanent residents?
If you need to get unemployment to stay here year round, you are not living as well as you would like, and not using the businesses that do stay open! Perhaps such a situation feeds into the abuse of drugs we keep reading about.
While I was impressed at the quick resurfacing of Route 9 near me in Upper Township, there are a lot of infrastructure projects that seem to be going nowhere. One of those is the road from Route 9 over to Sea Isle. How long is that expected to continue in its current state?
While stores like Dollar General and Walmart have their place, there are some store categories that send me (and others) driving long distances to shop and spend our money. I can’t believe there is not a national department store or even a Jo-Ann fabric store for the many active quilters and sewers in this county!
This last year has been eye-opening for all of us, not just those who moved to Cape May County recently. Political activism on the local level is now recognized as something we all need to participate in for the good of our local as well as national lives.
In getting more active, I have met Danielle Davies and Greg Wall, who are both running for freeholder, and I am impressed with their energy, their interest in the lives of every person living here, and their comprehension of larger issues. I have also met Keisha Bond, who is running in Upper Township, and see great things ahead for someone who is willing to dive in to right the wrongs.
I hope when it comes time to vote in November, we all remember these three names and make our votes count for an improved way of life in Cape May County.
