To The Editor:
Well here I go again, debating an idea not with my opponent, but her campaign manager. This is the same insurance man who unsuccessfully tried to keep me off the ballot. It is interesting that Bob Noel says that this discussion on a mercantile license would apply to 200 businesses.
I said in my release that we could possibly collect up to $750,000 in new tax relief if township committee approved a mercantile license. This would be coming from approximately 2,000 businesses, not his 200.
According to Noel’s math, he puts each business at a fee of $3,500; this is just another misleading scare tactic. I really like his math, it’s fuzzy at best but he offers no reason as to how 2,400 current fire inspections in the township would only yield 200 businesses that could be charged.
We are only having this discussion because something has to be done to reduce the burden on each taxpayer. My opponent has approved over a half a million dollars this year on special legal consultants that are her political friends. A mercantile fee is one of the last things I ever wanted to pursue, but we’re up against a large budget hole next year.
Again, I said that we need to have a discussion on new revenue to off set property taxes. Noel has a way of twisting the truth to continue his smear campaign. Why is the devil always in his details? Meanwhile, I have sent two letters to my opponent, Sue DeLanzo, and asked for dates to her convenience so we can debate this and other issues.
In times of economic recession, the question is how do we bridge the gap in the loss of state aid and revenues all while up against a 2 percent cap? What I wouldn’t do is what my opponent did, and that is to raise the pad fees on 1,900 mobile home residents. These are people who received no increase in Social Security and had their Homestead rebates taken away.
It’s interesting that DeLanzo is against the little people and is afraid to even consider a discussion on a mercantile license. Could it be that both Noel and DeLanzo are both small business owners? Let me remind Noel, “I am running against DeLanzo, not you.” Is it that Noel has started his Democratic campaign for 2011?
