Villas VFW…Where Everyone Knows Your Name

By Lyon

To The Editor:
Can it be November already? This is that time of the year that our small part of the universe quiets down and our visitors leave for home. Sure, we will miss them. We always do because they have become friends and part of our lives. They come back year after year and we always welcome them back. to the place where we first met them — our Villas VFW. I’ve wondered why they always faithfully return to our little club with a big smile and a hug every time. I think I’ve figured it out.
Everyone knows the feeling of entering a home of folks who care about you and makes no bones about it — right? Well, that’s the feeling you get when you enter Villas VFW 5343 whenever you come through the door. As soon as you step into the building someone will most assuredly greet you with a hug or a smile. Several will greet you with a wave or call your name. The friendliness is palatable and it is quite evident you are welcome here. Even complete strangers are made welcome and the good will is contagious. A lot goes into making your visit one you will want to remember.
The atmosphere and the people combine naturally. The fact that every birthday brings forth a homemade celebration cake made by Dee Golley is a given. Golley never seems to tire of surprising the recipient(s) with this honor. Then there is the Commander, Billy Howard. In my memory there have been many commanders that have served well and stepped down. Howard (who has the title of District Commander, as well) stands with the best of them. He is never too busy to hear your concerns or listen to a problem or suggestion. We are very lucky to have him, his mom and girlfriend there. They work tirelessly for the betterment of the club, the members, and our veterans. Their efforts are clearly visible in many ways. First and foremost are our obligations to any and all veterans and these efforts are met without hesitation. The Stars and Stripes mean more than a flag to this organization.
Last but not least – If you enjoy great music and love to dance, say hello to the man responsible. Johnny Tocco is our “Man of the Hour, Year, and Century” at our VFW. He is everybody’s friend and we would erect a statue dedicated to him, if we could. Tocco will always brighten up our evening in one way or another. You can bet the farm on that. He doesn’t hesitate to give of his free time and talent for so many events over and over again for our vets and various occasions, which say a lot about his character. He rarely takes a break or stops communicating with his audience. It is a treat to watch him engage any handicapped person into his entertainment and the affection he shows them. That the “locals,” young and old, join in the banter and whatever else is going on is truly uplifting. Tocco includes everyone. He knows every one of us on a first name basis. He is everybody’s son, brother or whatever. I just love watching his mom, Eileen, as she looks on with pride at Tocco, he truly is “one in a million,” and all of us realize this fact.
If you care to visit our club at any time, please feel free to do so. You won’t be sorry.
