An Open letter from an undecided voter to 50 elected officials calling for accurate campaign advertising:
I see this big ad on page A29 of last week’s Herald and low and behold it’s calling for Senator Van Drew to engage in accurate campaign advertising and it’s signed by 50 of our best local officials. Right off the bat I think wow that’s going to be significant but then as I peruse through the names I notice they are all members of the Grand Old Party which means their all biased in this instance. (Who knew our politicians were human)
Anyway I would like to think their objective here is admirable even if it is flawed, but the truth is that both parties are experts when it comes to manipulating facts and distorting reality.
The letter starts out by saying “we are opposed to the distortion of anyone’s record”; have you read any of the DeWeese campaign literature? According to the pieces I have received and read Van Drew is responsible for everything that has gone wrong in this county since 2001. I believe he has only been a senator since 2008. The Republican TV ad shows Van Drew indicating “I am a democrat I stick with my party “(just like our fab 50 officials). I and every other public worker, teacher, policeman, fireman and even Judge can tell you that Van Drew was next in line behind your buddy “Chris Christie” when it came to reforming our benefits, so you may want to advise your candidate to go back and correctly edit his commercial or doctor some other distorted footage in there.
I noticed you went out of your way to emphasize “Dave” has a SMALL pension. I am sure Mr. DeWeese receives a significant pension based on the fact that he was a Judge and he was in the system for over 20 years remember this is a defined plan. He has every right to that pension as he certainly earned it, but don’t patronize the voter by claiming it is SMALL as if to say insignificant most of your constituents I’m sure would disagree.
Assuming (we all know what happens when you do that) the Democrats heed your advice from page A29 and you heed my advice, maybe then one of the candidates for senate can distinguish themselves in the last few weeks of this campaign by letting us know how they are going to fix this mess we are in (rather than feeding us distorted and misleading information about each other on a constant basis) and then we might actually be able to make an informed decision come Election day.
As a voter all I want to know is how are the candidates going to make things better for all of us living in Cape May County in 2012 and beyond, everything else including all the mud- slinging is irrelevant at this point as we can’t go back and change the past unfortunately.
Using your very words… I write to you elected officials to ask you to encourage your candidate not to distort his opponents’ track record with more inaccurate attacks in the weeks to come. Doing so would reflect poorly on his campaign and will do a disservice to us the voters apart from the fact it will make all 50 of you look like hypocrites.
Thank you for your kind attention and responsiveness to this request.

Wildwood Crest – Several of Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks have created quite a bit of controversy over the last few weeks. But surprisingly, his pick to become the next director of the FBI hasn’t experienced as much…
