Time Middle Considers Five-Member Committee

By Voll

To The Editor:
It is time for Middle Township to take a serious look at our current township committee form of government. We have had a three-member governing body since the incorporation of our township in 1798, yes, 212 years ago. Back then, there were not too many residents living in our 72-square mile township.
It is time that the current township committee authorizes a charter study to investigate if the current form of government is representing all areas of our township
Currently, all three members of our Township Committee reside in Court House. All of our members are good people; however it is difficult for them to properly represent all communities. In the past, some were promoting increasing the committee to five members. The problem with this is the same of what we currently have — all could be from one area our township.
There are 16 communities within our township with different needs and requests. I believe that each area should have a local elected official that taxpayers could go to, and their concerns would be addressed. I have had this discussion with many residents throughout the township with a positive response to change. As far as cost, the salary structure would have to stay within what we are currently spending on our current governing body.
In New Jersey as communities have grown, studies are done to provide the best form of government to serve their people better. The New Jersey League of Municipalities provides the different forms of government offered in our state.
