That Was An Apology, Mr. President?

By Passe

To the Editor:
I listened to parts of an interview President Obama gave to NBC’s Chuck Todd the other day. I could not believe what I heard the president say and I could not believe what I heard some in the media say – “now that he’s apologized to the American people, where do we go from here?”
What? Did I hear that correctly? Was there an important part of this interview I missed?
I have since read the entire interview and I did hear correctly and I did not miss anything. Here is the president’s so-called apology to the American people:
“I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me. We’ve got to work hard to make sure that they know we hear them and we are going to do everything we can to deal with folks who find themselves in a tough position as a consequence of this.”
Mr. President, people are not finding themselves in this situation because of your assurances. They are finding themselves in this situation because of the law you signed after all the democrats in the house and senate, and only the democrats, voted to pass this bill. They are finding themselves in this situation because that was the intent of this law. They had to be forced off their current insurance and into a government run exchange in order to make it work.
Mr. President, you knew through the many reports issued by different government agencies as this bill was being crafted, debated and voted on, that millions of people would lose their health insurance plans, that millions of people would not be able to keep their doctors and that millions of people would be forced into insurance programs they did not want, did not need and, now we are finding out, is costing more and in some instances, is unaffordable. Yet, despite your knowing that all this was going to happen, you continued to say over and over again – if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.
I do not believe this bill would have passed and I do not believe you would have been reelected if you were honest with us and said, “We need to fix our broken health care system but tens of millions of you will lose your current plan and tens of millions of you may not be able to see your doctor when this becomes law.”
The bottom line is this is a terrible situation that millions of people are being cast into now, every day; life threatening for many suffering with serious, terminal illnesses. Almost five million people have now lost their health insurance after only five weeks. The numbers will keep increasing and the voices will get louder and louder.
I hope everyone remembers who put our country and into this situation when the 2014 elections roll around.
