That Distance in 200 Years?

By BRESAN

To The Editor:
Recently, while helping a friend sort through her long deceased husband’s belongings, I came across a very yellowed newspaper clipping. I shall quote this remarkable article and ponder of comparing to today’s society.
“Dear Ann Landers: I found this in a newspaper 30 years ago and put it away. It seems to have an uncanny relevance today. I hope you will deem it worthy of your column.”
“The average life of the world’s great civilizations has been 200 years. During this period each has progressed through the following sequence:
• From bondage to spiritual faith.
• From spiritual faith to great courage.
• From courage to liberty.
• From liberty to abundance.
• From abundance to selfishness.
• From selfishness to complacency.
• From complacency to apathy.
• From apathy to dependency.
• From dependency back to bondage.
Makes one pause and reflect on the country in which we live.
