To the Editor:
I would like to acknowledge and thank the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders for their leadership in leading the way with a new county-wide dispatch.
I am a retired police officer and an active volunteer fireman for more than 40 years, and I recall many discussions over the years about a centralized county-wide dispatch system, but it was never delivered. The county is now on the verge of a county-wide dispatch project that is set to launch next year in Lower Township.
This shared services initiative will provide better services to residents, which is so important when thinking about the life-and-death situations involving dispatch and the impact a matter of seconds could have in those situations.
It will also result in real, tangible savings for taxpayers. This type of thinking runs counter to the apparent status-quo mentality that exists in government; where most governments in New Jersey have out-of-control taxes that are increasing, regulations are expanding and the ability for middle-class people to survive in New Jersey borders on the impossible.
County-wide dispatch is a model on how government should operate and leaves no excuses for more towns not to join this cost-saving measure, eliminate duplication of services and serve the people as they were elected to do.
The freeholders have shown great leadership with this initiative and that is one reason why I will be voting to re-elect Freeholders Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes.
I encourage you to do the same – we need more leaders like them in office.
