To The Editor:
Two weeks ago, 11 Republican senators in Washington, D.C. co-sponsored S. J. Res. 11, introducing an amendment to the Constitution that would apply term limits to members of Congress. There is nothing else that Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and I agree on, except for this important piece of legislation. “If we’re ever going to permanently change Washington, we must change the process that encourages career politicians to amass personal power instead of making the hard decisions for the nation,” said DeMint on the floor of Congress.
Our Congress is hopelessly deadlocked on crucial legislation right now and as I write this, they are about to take off a week for the Fourth of July holiday rather than remain and deal with the debt limit, the budget and other legislation that sits stalled. So much legislation is being dismissed because of political issues, certainly not for the good of the nation. Amendments to the Constitution require approval by a two-thirds majority vote in Congress and be ratified by at least 75 percent of the states. Given that Congress has a vested interest in not having term limits, it would seem like a hopeless cause. But if 11 senators are already in favor, then it’s up to the American people to have our voices be heard.
The President of The United States can serve only two terms and that amendment was enacted just after FDR was voted in for the fourth time.
Enough of members of Congress sitting in those hallowed halls for 20, 30, 40 years. Term limits for Congress!
