Term ‘Czar’ Not Unique To President

By Slomski

To The Editor:
I understand the concern expressed on the Herald editorial page on Feb. 29 regarding President Obama’s appointees being named “czars” because of the often unsavory historical associations. However, the use of the term czar is far from unique to our current president.
It has frequently been used over the years to denote presidential appointees of both parties. I suspect that more often than not, the title has been used in that context by the media rather than by the presidents themselves.
