To the Editor:
First I want to compliment Art Hall. By publishing this newspaper and allowing all points of view to be expressed equally, he is upholding what the words “free press” really means. At a time when some are trying to impose limitations on access to the ballot box, on the expression of unpopular points of view, and even on political opposition to a majority whether, at a national, state, or local level, Art Hall is maintaining an open forum whether he personally agrees or not. Thank you, Mr. Hall! You’re a living example of one of the best, most valuable elements of America.
Now to my specific question. We all remember the “birther” conflict which was started by Donald Trump. A few years ago he insisted that President Obama was in fact not an American, not a legitimate president, in fact, a citizen of Kenya. After a few weeks, President Obama had enough and put his birth certificate from Hawaii, where he was born, on the Internet.
Now, Donald Trump has been asked to make his tax returns public, as all candidates for the presidency have done. He has refused, saying he can’t because he is being audited. However, the IRS has said that there is no legal issue; he can do what he wants with his own tax returns. Still, Trump refuses to show them.
What is he hiding? The tables are turned. The president obliged you, Mr. Trump – so why are you not providing the American people with information they need when considering you for the most powerful job in the world? Again, what are you ashamed of?
It’s a rhetorical question. We know that despite being able to fly on his private luxury jet from one of his palaces to another – like a third-world dictator – Donald Trump pays no taxes. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines? Schools, highways, bridges, food and water inspection, border security that he talks about so much? Let somebody else pay for it is his response.
