To the Editor:
I don’t need a rich Trump hatchet man like Treasury Secretary Mnuchin telling us the federal government shouldn’t subsidize the states. He and Trump will benefit from the proposed plan out of my middle-class pocket.
I submit it is the states and their taxpayers who subsidize the feds. If tax reform is desired then change the collection procedures. He who controls the purse strings controls the money. Here’s a plan. All federal taxes owed are to be collected by the states and these states will decide how much they think the feds need and will get. The states will also be able to collect interest on these holdings and keep such. Apply this type of plan to all taxes collected in the states, e.g. municipal, school board, fire districts, library, open space, county, and state-owed taxes. These taxes would be collected by the municipalities. They would meet with the representatives of the other governments to decide how much those entities need and will be given. Local governments will also be able to collect interest on the held taxes until payments are made.
Of course, this plan will never happen because each government entity mentioned above will never agree to give up funding its tax-supported fiefdom. This plan isn’t power to the people; it is a more direct tax spending control. I hope my plan scares politicians and gets the many not wealthy taxpayers to start thinking of solutions.
