To the Editor:
Studies have shown that pigs are as smart and social as the dogs we love to pamper.
It is immoral for the pork industry to confine female breeding sows in crates so small they can’t even turn around for their entire lives. Can you imagine the outrage if this was happening to dogs?
Nine states have banned the use of the intensive confinement systems known as gestation crates. Now New Jersey has the opportunity to do the same. A majority of both bodies of the state legislature have voted to ban New Jersey from using these cruel contraptions. More than 90 percent of New Jersey residents polled said they are in favor of such a ban. With so much support for this measure, I hope state legislators from both parties will continue to vote their consciences by once again showing their support for S1921 on the override.
