Storm Damage Homeowner’s Responsibility

By McMenamin

To The Editor:
During these economic times, I think we should be asking ourselves, “What is the role of local government?”
Recently, Middle Township, announced that it will have to raise taxes because of the winter storm cleanup. Excluding snow removal, a good portion of the cost has been the removal of branches fallen by the winter storms. So my question is, “Is it government’s responsibility to remove storm damage from private property?”
In most communities outside our area, this would be the responsibility of the homeowner and their insurance company. I think this is not the responsibility of government and should be stopped before the next hurricane or winter storm forces higher taxes.
Government does not have any money; they rely on the taxpayer to pay for required services. We now see that government has run out of other people’s money and must reduce spending.
