To the Editor:
Recently, I had the honor of attending the Annual Soroptimist of Cape May County Awards Dinner at The Shore Club. Scholarships, as well as community service awards, were presented to eight deserving young women. All had experienced various hardships in their young lives, from the devastating loss of a parent to the heart-stopping diagnosis of cancer. Yet, in spite of these cruel, life-changing events and with the support of their loving families, they have faced the challenges before them with dignity and perseverance.
Each and every graduating senior excelled academically, participated in after-school activities and contributed to their local communities on a regular basis. Moreover, each has been accepted to a fine college. We, the members of Soroptimist, and their wonderful families looked on with great pride as their special daughters, sisters, and mothers received their well-deserved awards.
Their personal stories were not only uplifting but so inspiring that I found it hard to let go when I returned home. Upon reflection, I realized that it was we, the members of Soroptimist, who were honored that evening to have simply been in the presence of such brave, courageous, young women. We wish them well and know that we are all richer for having met them.
