Shut Down the Government? Not a Christian Value

By Daignault

To The Editor:
Let me get this straight. Art Hall would rather shut down our entire government, including things like the National Guard which helped during last year’s Super-storm Sandy, than allow the affordable health care act to continue to be implemented?
He is saying that he would rather have a child who has a rare blood disorder, limited on the amount of money that is spent over his lifetime (or lack thereof) because these big insurance companies want to put profit over the life of a child? He would want to see people who have suffered from, and recovered from, cancer to not be able to find health insurance because of a “pre-existing conditions,” or victims of rape, incest, domestic abuse? I am just checking because it seems like that is not exactly a “Christian value.”
The Affordable Healthcare Act is not perfect; there should have been a single-payer option included. However, it is “the law of the land” according to Speaker of the House Jon Boehner. Hall and the rest of the Tea Party would rather send this country on a downward spiral economically so that insurance companies can make a profit. The one thing I can guarantee is if this happens, no Republican will win the White House in the next 20 years.
Mr. Hall, the House voted for “Obamacare,” the Senate voted for “Obamacare,” it was signed into law by President Obama. Not good enough? The Supreme Court ruled it was legal. Then, the American people spoke and said they want and like “Obamacare” by re-electing President Obama. Not only that, but while President Obama won re-election, the Senate stayed in the hands of the Democratic Party and, even though the G.O.P. holds the House, the Democratic Party got over one million votes more than the Republicans in House races.
It is Gerrymandering that gave the House to the G.O.P. In 1935, the Republican Party said that Social Security would be the end of this country. In 1965, the Republicans (including Ronald Reagan) said that Medicare would end this country. Guess what? They were wrong. The same thing will happen with the Affordable Health Care Act.
To encourage Congressman Frank LoBiondo to de-fund this breakthrough bill is just asking the congressman to commit treason, to put his party goals ahead of our country. It does not sound much like a “Christian value.” Then again, it may just be me.
