To The Editor:
I went to the Post Office in Wildwood on Sept. 9 to mail some personal and business packages. To my amazement, the Wildwood police had posted “no parking” signs on all the meters in front of the post office building. In front of the post office parking meters was a long line of motorcycles. For an instant I thought, “Why are they parking there when it says “no parking?” Then I realized the signs were there to keep customers of the post office from parking there so motorcycles could park there.
I can’t begin to describe how dumbfounded I was at this sight. These six or seven meters are the only place to park for post office business usually. They are very busy spots and are relied on heavily by customers of the post office. I have a cast on one foot and due to other more permanent conditions am authorized by the DMV to use handicap parking when available. I arrived about 4:40 p.m. By the time I found a legal spot at a meter a block and a half away, I almost didn’t make it to the window by the 5 p.m. closing.
A call to the police department got me the answer that “town hall ordered us (the police) to put them there.” Can they really block all the parking in front of a federal institution? Apparently they can. This just outrages me. This is the only post office on the island. It serves the residents and visitors of Wildwood Crest, West Wildwood, Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Diamond Beach.
Wildwood should show more consideration to their residents and those of these other neighboring communities. As I write this it is just after 6 p.m. Sept. 9. The post office is open on Friday and Saturday as well. A lot more post office customers will be disadvantaged before this weekend is over.
Shame on Wildwood!
